I am always excited to find a cool new way to use my BlackBerry. One way I have found to triple the speed of my typing is by adding words to my autotext. Here is how to add words and shortcuts as well as a list that I currently am using. Do you have some good ones that I should know about? Please share in the comments!
To access autotext, go to Options (usually wrench icon) > Autotext > New
pls = please
ty = thank you
gm = good morning
gn = good night
xmas = Christmas
mp = my pleasure
yw = you’re welcome
sa = San Antonio
bb = BlackBerry
hb = happy birthday
Thanks for the tip! I realized I was typing the same long names and titles a lot and this will save me quite a bit of time in emails.
I will often precede my emails with location-date-time stamp, just to make things clearer to the recipient, who might not be a nerd. For that, I have defined in AutoText a few entries for a few different cities they are of the form “odt”, “mdt”, “rdt”, etc., and are defined as follows: (Ottawa, %D, %T) for “odt”.
“odt” will then expand to “Ottawa, Sat, Oct 25, 2008, 16:20:01”.
Now let me throw the ball back in everybody else’s court:
Other than the currently documented AutoText macros such as %D, %T, etc., does anybody know of any other ones that BB might use internally?
Thanks Françoys! There are a bunch of them, but I don’t know what they mean. You can find them by going to Options and checking the list. Great idea on your use, really cool!
That is a cool trick I didn’t know about, I will pay attention to what I type frequently and keep adding to my AutoText list!
ss = 🙂 (which is normally a 4 button sequence)
ww = 😉
wu = What are you up to?
This you very much!!
Your tip is very helpful!!
Here are some I found, and where I found them…
* %D – Long Date (Fri, Jun 1, 2008)
* %o – Name (as entered in Options –> Owner –> Name)
* %O – Information (as entered in Options –> Owner –> Information)
* %p – 12345678901 (Device Phone Number. No punctuation)
* %P – 12345678 (Device PIN)
* %T – Long Time (6:58:20 AM)
* %V – 8800/4.2.1.79 (Device Model/OS Version)

Does anyone know of a way to enter a macro that will just move the cursor back a few spaces? I am trying to enter a command in emails that a parser will be able to use. i.e. “[hide until: 12/04]” I am trying to set up an AutoText string that will type out “[hide until: ]” but place the cursor inside the right bracket so I can just type “hu” and then immediately type “12/04” without having to move the cursor manually (at least until I’m through with the date).
I don’t know of a way for you to do that due to being able to place the cursor in a specific location. My best suggestion is having “hu” turn into “[hide until: ” waiting for you to complete the string with the 12/04]. That’s best I’ve got!
